Letters From Lindsey
I Did It This Morning
Over the weekend, I did something I haven’t done in ages: I sat in a local bookstore for a few hours and just read. No agenda. No laptop. Just me, a cup of something warm, and a book that pulled me in: “Let Them” by Mel Robbins.
Do you know Mel? The more I listen to her, the more I like her. Her story is one of those self-made, underdog kinds—the kind that makes you believe in comebacks. She hit rock bottom at 41, sitting in over $800,000 of debt, and now she’s a world-renowned speaker and leader.
One concept from the introduction of this book stood out to me immediately. It’s this simple—almost too simple—idea:
5, 4, 3, 2, 1… Go.
She says that whenever you’re dreading a task, feeling unmotivated, overthinking, or stuck in hesitation, you count backwards from five—and then just do the thing.
No thinking. No negotiating. No excuses.
Honestly, I was skeptical. It sounded way too easy to actually work.
But this morning, I tried it.
For years I’ve wanted to be that early-riser person—the one who’s up before the sun, grounded in peace, prayer, or purpose. You know, the type who wakes up at 5 AM, has their devotional time, drinks hot coffee in silence, maybe even journals or meditates—before anyone else is up.
But every time the alarm clock rang, I pressed snooze. Every. Single. Time.
Until today.
This morning, I heard the alarm and instead of giving in to the usual pattern, I counted:
5… 4… 3… 2… 1…
And I got up.
I was out of bed by 5:05 AM, and as I’m writing this, it’s still early—but I feel accomplished. Not just because I beat the snooze button, but because I broke a cycle I’ve struggled with for years.
Now, I’m not saying I’m a new person after one morning. I’ll have to ease into this, and I know there will be tough days. But this—this might just be what works for me.
And maybe, just maybe, it could work for you too.
So Let Me Ask You:
If you’ve ever tried the 5-4-3-2-1 method, I’d love to hear your story.
Is it magic? Is it nonsense? Is it somewhere in between? Let me know—I’m honestly curious.
And if you haven’t tried it yet… maybe tomorrow morning is your chance.
Cheering you on, always—
With heart,
-Lindsey Huettner
