Letters from Lindsey
don't start with marketing.
Yes, this tip is coming from a person who has made marketing their career and has helped hundreds of companies over 10 years as a marketing agency owner.
Read on.
I cannot tell you how many business owners I have talked to who are watching their bottom lines diminish, are on the verge of tears, and want their last ditch effort of finally doing some marketing to solve all of their problems. They think if they just spend their last amount of money on marketing, customers will appear and all of their troubles will be over.
Well, that’s not really how it works.
Marketing is meant to enhance and take businesses that have a foundation of clients to the next level.
I can hear the marketers screaming right now.
But I challenge any marketer to call me and let’s chat about it. I could never ethically tell a business owner who is desperate for their next customer that an email campaign, a new website, a logo, or a series of social media posts is going to get them this customer. Am I saying it couldn’t happen? No. But the likelihood is low.
So, what do you do if you are this business owner?
Start with sales.
Use your money to figure out your sales strategy. Use our SOP below to create a few buyer personas, find out where those people hang out, find their contact details, and start selling to them. If you don’t know how to sell, spend your money on a sales person. SELL SELL SELL. Email, call, send a present to them. IF you have a good product/service, you are talking to the right person, and you have a sales person who can sell, you will get clients.
Then, and only then….start on marketing. Allow your marketing team to come in behind the sales person and:
– Enhance your sales collateral.
– Update your customer facing assets to bring more legitimacy to your business (website, social media, blogs, brochures/flyers).
– Start email campaigns to nurture potential customers your sales person cannot sell to right away.
– Create a lead generating strategy and start implementing cold emails, ads, cold calling, LinkedIn outreach, etc…
– Find speaking events and podcasts to be featured on.
– Etc etc etc etc…….
At this point, marketing is great and will for sure bring potential clients to your door. Marketing will enhance the efforts of the sales person, will aid in sales closing rates, will bring in new leads, and give your business the legitimacy it needs to take you to the next level.
Marketing is here to aid, enhance, and propel your already functioning business forward.
As always, reach out if you want to bounce some ideas around on your companies customer service journey. I am always happy to chat!
