Letters from Lindsey

A swift kick in the rear…

…from yours truly

Hi hi!

When are you going to get done with the basics so your business really can grow?

I work with business executives all of the time and it amazes me how a lot of them are still crippling themselves on a day to day basis. What do I mean by this?

  • Day to day delivery processes are not documented.
  • A hiring system is not set in stone.
  • Sales process documents are not created.
  • A system for how to store files is non existent.
  • There is not a regular meeting/evaluation cadence for their direct reports.

When I talk to these executives, it’s as if their business is working in spite of themselves.  Which on one had is awesome!  Because just think, if you fix the above, how much easier it would be to stop getting stopped in your daily work flow by minor inconveniences and for everyone to be rowing in the same direction with the same processes and systems?

But how do you even start going about doing this?

First, admit you have a problem.

Then, let’s get started.

Let’s take day to day delivery processes are not documented as our problem.  Here is your step by step on how to get these done and move past this pain.

  1. Decide on what processes per department need to be documented.
  2. Decide on how you are going to document these processes.  We use Scribe.  It is amazing and with the chrome and extension, it easily fits into your day to day activities.
  3. Divide responsibilities – decide who is going to do what.
  4. Set a deadline for when the processes need to be documented.
  5. Have someone who did not create the SOPs go through each of them and make sure they make sense.
  6. File and make available for all to use.
  7. Train your team on the processes.
  8. Manage to these processes.

By the end of this, you really want anyone to be able to come into your company and be able to sit down and follow the directions and know how to complete the tasks.

Each of the above problems can follow a very similar set of steps to complete.

Yes, it will take while…quite a while for all of the above to be done, especially if you have been in business for a while and have quite a few employees.  But I PROMISE, it is well worth it. You will feel a new found creative freedom to take on proactive problems instead of these reactive ones very soon.
